With this year marking the 100th anniversary of the Christmas truce football match that took place during World War I, amateur and professional clubs up and down the country are uniting to remember this iconic event. In 1914, the British and German soldiers fighting in the trenches declared an unofficial ceasefire which saw them lay down there weapons and come together in order to play a game of football.
A whole host of events have been organised throughout the month of December to celebrate this remarkable occurrence. These include the unveiling of a Christmas truce memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, the release of a charity single and a Christmas truce memorial football tournament that will take place in Ypres, Belgium.
Across the past weekend clubs have been participating in ‘A moment in history’ mixed photograph which sees players from both teams forgetting their rivalries and participating in a group photo. Pre-match photos were uploaded to social media using the hashtag #footballremembers and these photos are also being shown on www.footballremembers.com.
Here are a selection of the ‘A moment in history’ photos that have been uploaded to social media over the past few days.
